Adejumo David He used to be the light. The shining star. The one who everybody wanted to be around. He was the ever smiling "father" Christmas. The instant girl's charm. He was bright and elegant. Bold and constructive in his approach to things. Maybe that was why. He was not afraid to be around people. He wasn't the one to stammer at the glance of a mermaid. He wasn't scared to answer the next available maths question in a class that has five of his most intense crushes deeply rooted in chairs few meters from his. Maybe that was why. He was the one to get things done. He was the one who executed almost everything that comes to mind to do. But that wasn't really why he was like that. He wasn't a star just because he saw himself as one. He was a star basically because he surrounded himself with people who constantly reminded him he really is. Of how priceless a jewel he is to them and to everybody that cares to take a bite of his awesomeness. He wasn't ...

OPINION: Indecent Dressing and Look – The Misconceptions and the Need for Proper Education

Image
By Peter Oyebanji I have seen a lot of articles about indecent dressing and look, all being nice but with huge respect, they have also been myopic. There has hardly been a thought of digging deep into the issue of indecent dressing, even some educated youths have conformed to the stereotypes about indecent dressing and look. I have always had the thought that the problem we have when it comes to branding a dressing or look indecent are the misconceptions about the word itself, it got confirmed this session after witnessing and being a victim of these misconceptions. Educated folks are hugely guilty of this, because there is a particular way in which they treat issues concerning indecent dressings like those stereotypes we have been fed with are facts. You’ll see lecturers sending students out of classes because of their own incomprehension, with the usual pride with which they put up. The thing about this is that it has gotten overly thanks to Armed forces, Lecturers, Parents, differen...

(Opinion) Educational Loan and Its Inherent Contradictions; A Policy Too Dead To Exist.

Image
By Gbenga Oloniniran Von The Nigerian government is yet to provide the most brilliant of her Professors of Economics, Finance or Commerce to defend the idea of 350,000 naira and above increment  in tuition fees and "Education Bank' idea as proposed to ASUU to be the panacea to the underfunded education sector. Economically, the question of student/parents affordability of the proposed amount is readily self-defeating and dead on arrival. Hence, the focus lens is on the 'educational bank loan' which seems to be the government's last card to be exhausted to support their agenda. By virtue of instance, a student would be meant to obtain a loan of 500, 000 naira amounting to 2million naira or 2.5million naira to complete a four to five year program in a tertiary institution. By the virtue of the self-defeating economic  affordability of this amount, an instance average of 60, 000 students out of about 70, 000 students of UNIBEN as example would be indebted of 120 billi...

(Opinion) Nigeria @ 58: Call to Independence.

Image
OladeleAdeola So it's another year again, in fact, the 58th when Nigerians celebrate independence, freedom from colonialism. But the question remains the same over the years. Are we really free? What has changed since 58 years ago? Where exactly is Nigeria heading to? Was independence actually the best the nationalists that initiated and sacrificed for the fight had to opt for? Well, maybe it was what they thought will be the best for Nigerians. Before 1960, we were bound in the chains of colonialism from the white who preached good intentions in disguise of the evil they have in heart. They exploited the lands flowing with milk and honey, manipulated the leaders and followers have no choice than to succumb. They committed one of the greatest crime to humanity- enslaved us. Nationalists rose to change the story to make us independent and stand firm on our own. They fought relentlessly and even sacrificed lives to make us stand out as the  giant of Africa. The fight was not in...
